2026.12.19: “Why We Record” Exhibit on Palestine

Hawthorne Library Community Room, 2707 E Washington Ave, Madison, 1-4 PM

On December 19 Madison’s Hawthorne Library will host an opening of Why We Record: Defying Fragmentation and Erasure in Palestine, a visual exhibit from Visualizing Palestine and the American Friends Service Committee. This drop-in event  is free and open to the public. Light snacks will be served.

In addition to a chance to view the exhibit, the December 19 event will  include a  demonstration of Tatreez, Palestine’s traditional embroidery, and a book-making workshop and display hosted by Madison’s Andaleeb Cartonera including a chance to learn about the Cartonera tradition and make a cover for a book on Palestine. Read Palestine will host a children’s activity and read-aloud, along with a display of children’s books on Palestine available at Hawthorne and other Madison libraries, and attendees will have a chance to chat with local organizations working for human rights in Palestine, learn more, and contact their elected representatives.

Why We Record: Defying Fragmentation and Erasure in Palestine includes a collection of Visualizing Palestine’s visuals, AFSC’s archival photos, and excerpts from published stories on the themes of fragmentation, displacement, return, and future visioning. The exhibit invites viewers to witness the truths of the past, the heartbreak of the present, and the possibilities for a future without oppression in Palestine. The exhibit is family friendly, and despite the inclusion of difficult material, it is appropriate for all ages.
