Thousands of Palestinians Return to Destroyed Homes in Northern Gaza

These are the scenes as tens of thousands of Palestinians make their way to the most heavily destroyed part of the Gaza Strip on Monday morning, as Israel and Hamas agreed for another group of hostages to be released on Thursday.

Israel officially lifted its closure of the north for the first time since the early weeks of the 15 month war with Hamas. The return of Palestinians was delayed as Israel refused to open checkpoints, due to alleged breaches of the ceasefire agreement.

However the dispute was resolved overnight. Huge crowds of people were seen carrying their belongings on foot along a main highway running next to the coast.
