The Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine unequivocally condemns the police execution of Corey Ruiz. The African American father, artist, and poet was killed by four Madison police officers on Wednesday, August 22 after squad cars responded to reports that there was a man “checking parked cars.” Ruiz fled on a bicycle, but was pursued by four officers who shot him within twenty-eight seconds of apprehending him.

Allegations that Ruiz had a knife and of his prior criminal record do not justify the lack of  justice and due process in this case. He was murdered by police who didn’t bother with any of the legal protocols, who did not value his life.

We recognize this pattern of systematic and institutionalized violence as parallel to the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. We know that US police departments exchange information, technology, and training with the Israeli army. In Gaza and the West Bank, Palestinians are targeted for execution and punishment by an occupying army that enjoys complete impunity for their action. In the United States, African Americans and other people of color are marked for the same treatment, with the perpetrators shielded from accountability for their actions.

We are tired of writing statements, tired of the endless stream of Black, brown and Palestinian death. The Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine calls for justice in the streets of the United States and Palestine.
