Siblings Jana and Jehad and their parents arrived in Madison from Gaza just over one year ago. Both children suffer from a genetic disorder, phenylketonuria (PKU), and rely on regular medical monitoring and a severely restricted diet paired with special “medical foods” Untreated, PKU leads to a dangerous buildup of the amino acid phenylalanine in the blood stream and brain, leading to irreversible brain damage. For over a year prior to their medical evacuation Israel’s assault on Gaza prevented the children from accessing the medical care and diet needed to keep them healthy.
Thankfully the children are now receiving life-saving treatments, but resettling in Madison while caring for two seriously ill children, combined with the rising costs of rent, food and other household needs, continues to be an uphill battle for their family. We hope you will consider making a monthly pledge, or a one-time gift, towards keeping Jana and Jihad and their parents housed, fed, and healthy.
