Why the Israeli assault on Gaza? Why now? What are the Israeli motivations? What are the broader, deeper contexts for this massive act of aggression against a largely defenseless people? These and other questions will be the focus of a conversation with host Allen Ruff and special guest Jennifer Loewenstein, Palestine Human Rights activist, co-founder of the Madison-Rafah Sister City Project and Lecturer on the Contemporary Middle East, the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, the UW-Madison.

Gaza Community Mental Health Programme Bombed

Hello everyone,

We are sorry and angry to report that the building housing the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme in Gaza City, one of the agencies we work with, has been severely damaged. The building is reported to be still standing but totally unusable, with all contents destroyed. See this commentary and then the article:

This morning brings the awful news, via the Toronto Star, that the Gaza Community Mental Health Center was bombed and destroyed by Israeli planes. The article asserts that it stands not far from a police station. But a picture I saw the other day had no buildings nearby. The attack raises the question if the Israelis are now targeting the civilian infrastructure, such as health facilities, so as to make life in the Gaza concentration camp even more unlivable than it has been over the several years of blockade. Given the paucity of detailed information coming out of Gaza, it will be a while till we can get an accurate picture of the nature of the targets and the devastation occurring in Gaza. As I posted in February 2007, the staff of the Center had no compunctions criticizing the fratricidal conflict among Palestinians that was tearing Gaza apart. They were certainly no front for Hamas. I am beside myself with this news. As usual, tragedy becomes horror when you feel some personal connection. A proposal as been made for psychologists to take up a collection to rebuild the Center. We shall see where that will go. Of course, I will report here any developments.

Below is the latest release from Al Mezan Center for Human Rights and a previous one from PCHR (so far as we know, both are still standing).

Gazan civilians increasingly at risk in assault on Hamas

Joshua Mitnick, The Christian Science Monitor, Dec 31, 2008

"They are not intending to kill civilians, I believe that," says Iyad Sarraj, a Gazan human rights activist who heads the Gaza Community Mental Health Center. "But at the same time, if they have a target, and some civilians are in the vicinity, it doesn't matter. They have to hit the target anyway. Add to this that they are not 100 percent accurate."

Mr. Sarraj says that a friend and his family were almost left for dead after their house was buried in the rubble from an the Israeli air force attack on a neighboring multistory building.

Tel Aviv – On the fourth day of airstrikes in Gaza Tuesday, one of Israel's many targets was a Hamas military commander's home within the teeming Jabaliya refugee camp. He wasn't there, but seven civilians died as a result of that attack.

Until now Israel has targeted mainly Hamas offices, ministries, and centers of power in a bid to limit collateral damage while still crippling the Islamists' ability to fire rockets across the border. But as the conflict stretches on and Israeli warplanes and drones seek out Hamas commanders and other militant leaders hiding in neighborhoods in the densely packed coastal strip, it will be harder to contain civilian deaths.

Israeli Attacks Kill Over 310 in Gaza – One of Israel’s Bloodiest Attacks on Palestinians Since 1948

DemocracyNow.org, December 29, 2008

Amidst worldwide protests, Israel is continuing its bombing campaign against Gaza for the third consecutive day and preparing to launch a possible ground invasion. Following months of a crippling blockade, this has been described as one of Israel’s bloodiest attacks on Palestinians since 1948. Latest reports indicate that 310 people have been killed and 1,400 injured in the aerial strikes across the Gaza Strip since Saturday morning. The latest targets of the air strikes include the Hamas Interior Ministry building and the Islamic University. Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced today that Israel is in an “all-out war with Hamas and its proxies” in Gaza. Fears of a ground invasion are growing after Israel declared a military buffer zone around Gaza, closing off the strip and its 1.5 million residents to journalists and civilians.

We speak to Dr. Moussa El-Haddad and Fida Qishta in Gaza, Dr. Mustafa Barghouti in Ramallah, Gideon Levy in Tel Aviv and Ali Abunimah in the US.

Guests:

Dr. Moussa El-Haddad, retired physician in Gaza City. His daughter Laila El-Haddad is a journalist who writes the popular blog ‘Raising Yousef’

Activists aboard the Dignity boat (R) arrive to the southern ...

TYRE, Lebanon (AFP) – An Israeli naval vessel collided on Tuesday with a boat carrying activists and medical supplies that was trying to break the blockade of Gaza, forcing it to divert to a port in Lebanon.

Passengers on board the 20-metre (66-foot) Dignity said the Israeli patrol boat rammed their vessel causing extensive damage, but Israel insisted the two boats collided as the Israeli navy was trying to contact its captain.

Television pictures of the boat entering the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre showed a large gash in the bow of the boat on the port side, with pieces of wood and broken glass covering the deck.

Palestine's Guernica and the Myths of Israeli Victimhood

Mustafa Barghouthi, The Huffington Post, December 29, 2008

This is a guest post written by Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative. These comments and views are his own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Huffington Post. Barghouti is a former secular candidate for President of Palestine and has been a strong advocate of non-violent responses to Israeli occupation. Barghouti is thought by many to be a leading contender in the next Palestinian presidential election. Perspectives have also been solicited from various national leaders and incumbent Knesset leaders in Israel.

The Israeli campaign of 'death from above' began around 11 am, on Saturday morning, the 27th of December, and stretched straight through the night into this morning. The massacre continues Sunday as I write these words.

The bloodiest single day in Palestine since the War of 1967 is far from over following on Israel's promised that this is 'only the beginning' of their campaign of state terror. At least 290 people have been murdered thus far, but the body count continues to rise at a dramatic pace as more mutilated bodies are pulled from the rubble, previous victims succumb to their wounds and new casualties are created by the minute.

What has and is occurring is nothing short of a war crime, yet the Israeli public relations machine is in full-swing, churning out lies by the minute.
